~A note from Marley~

I am honored to tell you that I was presented with the Milton F. Perry Award by the National James-Younger Gang for In the Shadow. This is especially meaningful to me as not only was Milt a close friend, he is someone I have always held in high esteem as a true scholar. I’ve never met anyone who was more fascinated with the history of the James-Younger Gang. Meeting in 1980, Milt and I, along with our unconventional group of colleagues, spent many hours over the years trading stories, theories, adventures, laughs, and characters. We had a great time learning an lot about “the Boys”. Yet as much as we learned, we saw there was always more to the picture.

When it came time to write In the Shadow, I decided I would focus on how Bob and Jim Younger, in particular, would always be mired in their brother Cole’s saga, no matter whether or not that was how they wanted it to be. It was a hard life for them; and a fascinating tale. As I wrote this first fiction, although he wasn’t with us anymore, I knew that if he were, Milt would enjoy the story too.

The modern-day James-Younger Gang likely discusses the same things that we did all those years ago, only with more facts now to fuel their theories. But “the Boys” were good at hiding their truths; there are still unanswered questions to knock around. Maybe with In the Shadow I’ve added to their fun.

I want to say thank you to the National James-Younger Gang for recognizing my work. I appreciate knowing that you enjoyed exploring the legend by traveling a different highway. Just like the men whose name you bear.

I’m excited to announce the publication of my first historical novel, In the Shadow. In the Shadow is the story of Bob Younger, a quiet and perceptive boy experiencing life in Western Missouri from the time of the Missouri-Kansas Border War, through the War Between the States and its aftermath.

It was so much fun to revisit the subject I explored in my first non-fiction book, The Outlaw Youngers: A Confederate Brotherhood. Giving voice to the strong personalities involved in this story was both challenging and exciting. The characters that populate In the Shadow are real and most of the events happened, but this is a novel; this is the way… it might have been.
